The Consciousness Project — Hopeful Solutions for Epic Problems

(I don’t agree with everything written such as that global warming can be solved by our consciousness for I don’t believe in man made global warming itself however I think we need to change the way we are interacting with nature, technology, materialism and our impact on the environment and this will be needing a ‘rise’ or evolution in consciousness however whether that influence or change happens internally or externally or even both is something for an entirely different debate.)

As founders and backers, we are announcing a major initiative to solve the epic problems that the world faces. Leading the way is global warming, with its eventual threat of mass extinction if worse comes to worst.

But climate change is linked to globalization, economic upheaval, overpopulation, and hostile tensions in the world’s hot spots. The link, we believe, is consciousness, and the only way to solve our epic problems is to arrive at an understanding of consciousness that will benefit humanity.

Whether in the short run or the long run, the choice is between a deteriorating planet or a new paradigm.

The existing paradigm is scientific, as we all know. Objective science is the hallmark of society today. It has an unrivaled power base. Its description of reality has molded the modern world. Its worldview holds sway over universities, governments and the public at large. Everyone who participates in the consensus view of reality has been touched by it. But the role of the observer has puzzled and intrigued physics since the quantum revolution a century ago. We feel that this issue offers a crucial opening for expanding the role of science.

As a counterpoint to the science juggernaut, there is another view of reality supported by loosely aligned groups in religion, philosophy, and a minority in science. Their worldview is consciousness-based. Whatever their differences, supporters of consciousness place mind first in Nature and matter second. Such a worldview has no significant financial backing comparable to mainstream science. It has been excluded from experimentation in major universities and all but banished from respectability, depending on the rich heritage, East and West, of saints, sages, and seers who fall outside the scientific method.

A New Vision

The vision of The Consciousness Project is to close this gap by expanding science and at the same time submitting consciousness to experimental research. The opening for this vision has already appeared among a generation of researchers who regard the fusion of mind and body, consciousness and matter, physics and biology, as paramount. Objective science has failed to explain how consciousness arose from matter. The consciousness tradition has yet to explain how mind could create matter. Two worldviews depend on one of these explanations being true. Until we can show how molecules learned to think or how thoughts create molecules, the full truth about Nature and reality will remain hidden.

As to specifics, The Consciousness Project will focus on the most urgent questions that would lead to a final answer:

1. Does consciousness leave traces in the physical world? If so, can they be measured and replicated?

2. Are the brain processes associated with mind a cause or an effect?

3. Is there mind outside the brain?

4. Since all living organisms display biological autonomy – the ability to make decisions that are not predetermined by physics and chemistry – is this evidence of mind in all life forms?

5. Is the activity of consciousness on any level where it might exist – human, biological, physical, or cosmic – consistent with the proven findings of quantum physics?

6. Is the universe conscious?

7. Did human awareness evolve from systems throughout Nature that self-organize in an intelligent way?

The fact that these primary questions are being addressed after decades of neglect spurs the need for even more expanded research. The benefits to society could be incalculable. Through the objective approach, technologies have burgeoned to improve material life. With a parallel advance in observer-based science, a huge domain of consciousness may reveal abilities in self-healing, mental communication, the eradication of inner conflicts that lead to war, and new areas of inspiration and intellectual breakthroughs.

We recognize that consciousness, although the hallmark of human existence, has suffered from problems of acceptance and credibility in mainstream science (despite the original quantum pioneers who became convinced that consciousness must be included in any observational scheme – such figures as Max Planck, Erwin Schrödinger, and Wolfgang Pauli). Moreover, the consciousness worldview has no center, critical mass, or focus that enables people to connect with it beyond changeable intellectual and spiritual fads.

The responsibility of The Consciousness Project then, is to create that critical mass, which will become the necessary core for consciousness-based science. To do this we will organize a five- year project, in both basic and applied research, starting with a funding of $1 billion dollars. Of this initial money, half will be raised from investors, half through worldwide participation by institutions and individuals. The latter will include a global social network program to educate and inspire people about our efforts. Everything we fund will be transparently outlined. We want as many as possible to grasp the basic consciousness premise, the reasons for working on it, and the potential benefits to society. Since the Project will act as the funding institution for qualifying researchers worldwide, we have enlisted advisers and consultants to act as enterprise partners if and when we discover technologies that measurably improve people’s lives.

The Consciousness Project aims to be open-minded but one-pointed in its focus. There are many competing definitions of consciousness, tracing their origins back thousands of years. East and West, each of these strands has something valuable to contribute. A modern definition of consciousness that all or most researchers can agree upon is highly desirable. Such a definition doesn’t exist at present. It is hidden at the junction of visible matter and invisible mind. Now that science has turned its gaze, at long last, to this junction, we believe it will be the very crux of reality. The Consciousness Project is going where reality leads us – this has been the impetus that resulted in every great scientific discovery, past, present, and future.

Action Steps

We realize that vision does not turn into reality without action. Given the epic problems all of us face, action here must be global. Therefore, we intend to use social media and the Internet to form a web of like-minded people who urgently want to find solutions. Through a worldwide community we have dubbed Indra’s Net, we invite the active participation of everyone with researchers and philanthropists in the lead but basing the entire project on individual needs as well.

The activities of The Consciousness Project will have five main thrusts.

1. We have divided the project into three areas: Theory, Evidence, and Benefits. By keeping these separate, we can move quickly on some fronts while others move more slowly. Theory is abundant already, and so is evidence, even if mainstream science lags in recognizing the fact. Benefits will capture the most public attention, because consciousness impacts health, well-being, relationships, and the entire social fabric. These are our all-important link to individuals and improving their quality of life.

2. The project will offer substantial prizes for advances in consciousness, eventually aiming to compete with the Nobel Prize. The prizes will attract worldwide attention, recognizing advances in the three areas of theory, evidence, and benefits.

3. Associating the project with major scientists and thinkers will attract attention – we are seeking leaders in any field who will lend their public support to the crucial role that consciousness plays in advancing global solutions, scientific and social. We envision a growing body of advisors and consultants who will assess the research projects we fund and who will keep the world abreast of optimistic change for the future.

4. For visibility that remains daily and constant, we will launch a Consciousness Project website whose slogan is “Cracking the Cosmic Code.” It will encompass diverse elements: science news, a blog, interactive materials, and transparent financial information, all combined in one place. The website will be a clearing house for all avenues of consciousness research. It will also serve to advertise the prizes and to invite new proposals that the project can fund.

5. For quick visibility, our best funding option is to reward the most promising ongoing research. That way we don’t have to wait 3-5 years with start-up studies. Those are important, too, so the project will follow the model honed in Silicon Valley for balancing pure research, start-up studies, and ongoing work. This is the core of our financial commitment. The Consciousness Project will provide guidance and venture research funding for scientists worldwide who are developing consciousness based products that could benefit everyday lives. The focus will be in three primary areas of development – well-being, communications, and intentional technology. We are not simply theorists but pragmatic managers looking for tangible results that are robust and reproducible. While we may take decades to refine the basic definition and theory of consciousness it is the useful products that come out of the next five years of The Consciousness Project that will be its legacy.

6. We feel that compassion, being a quality of consciousness, falls under the aims of the Project. Our support will go to select humanitarian efforts to raise the quality of life through raising the quality of consciousness. Creating a global network of humanitarian efforts and sharing the practices of “Love in Action” will improve education and health, but ultimately we want to bring economic and social justice for all.

7. We will support the urgent global campaign to solve climate change and reach the totally necessary goal of a sustainable planet.

8. Conflict resolution has been making painfully slow progress in recent decades. We will support new solutions based on consciousness rather than military or nationalist interests. Only a common humanity can be at peace. We encourage creative solutions to conflicts around the world, putting the principles of “Peace is the Way” into global action.

It is especially important for us as founders that The Consciousness Project be totally open and transparent. The main obstacle to solving global problems is the boundary that divides nations, societies, income levels, and so on. But consciousness is common to every human being. It is our shared birthright and our greatest source of pride. The project wants to operate without boundaries, which is why all financial transactions will be transparent, updated on a regular basis. Every participant and contributor will be able to see where funds are going.

The Consciousness Project is itself an outgrowth of consciousness. Rising awareness gave birth to the idea as people around the world clamor for two things: a better life and freedom from the deep anxiety over a planet in dire straits. We have faith in the possibility that a better life doesn’t mean despoiling the environment. The two are compatible only if a new paradigm teaches people that they can be happy, prosperous, and successful while still engaging in a sustainable lifestyle. A time of despair can end, but only on the basis of consciousness. We’ve dedicated ourselves to this solution and invite you to join us in optimism and hope. Please submit your ideas to

Details of the Project and its vision for a new humanity will be released at a formal kick-off Press conference at the Sages and Scientists Symposium to be held from August 16-18, 2013 at La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, CA. We will send you a full press release at that time.

The power of the serpent of Egypt was broken on the cross – Justin MartyrJesus Crucified Diptych of Jeanne of France Rogier van der Weyden

Let it be said that long before Romans had given us the images and idols of the Lord and Savior of Jesus crucified upon the cross, the serpent or snake was the chosen image by the ancient wise people of the not so distant past as their savior. In fact, the ancient Romans had used to carry forth the serpent in war, and one of their standards was the serpent on a pole. St. Augustine tells us that the image of Christ, and his Cross was the new ensign of Christian Warfare that the Romans had carried before them; being the Ensign or Profession of their Warfare. Hence as Jesus had said, “I come not to bring peace, but to bring a sword” (Matthew 10:34)

Serpent worship 2The ancient serpent-god of the Gnostics from the East was Serapis. The various spellings of the name Serapis are Sor-apis (Σέραπις, Attic/Ionian Greek), Sarapis (Σάραπις, Dorian Greek), Serapin (Greek Ὄφις), or in Hebrew Seraph. All these names mean ‘serpent.’ The name ‘seraphim’ is the plural form of serpent and is also said to mean, “the burning ones.” Serapis is the Hellenized version of the Egyptian Osiris-Apis.

“Be ye wise as serpents”

Serapis is the serpent on the cross that was also the precursor to the Christian Christ, who would take the serpents place upon the cross in this Sixth Age under the religion of Christianity. Before the Christian era, the most ancient worship of the serpent was practiced in many areas of the world. The serpent on the cross was still worshiped up to the 7th century in England under the Druids. Tacitus, the Roman senator and historian had said that Serapis was worshipped as a type of universal deity that represented Jupiter, Osiris, Pluto, and sometimes Jupiter Ammon. The cult of Serapis had originated from the Greco-Egyptian priesthood under the Ptolemies, and the testimony of Pausanias says the temples of Serapis were the most famous at Alexandria, and the most ancient at Memphis.

Moses and Brazen serpentWith the symbol of Jesus, St Mark informs us, “With the form of a serpent, He kills the serpent, for the serpent made out of the rod swallowed up the other serpents.” This symbolic event is further explained in St Augustine’s sixth sermon where he said, ” the serpent signifies death, and that Moses’ rod was changed into because our Lord took upon himself death for us.”

Prior to the 15th century A.D. , most people were unlearned and they could they read or write. The main educated class was usually those fortunate souls who were born into current ruling royal stock. This is why symbols and picture were often the preferred method in which the priesthood and government would educate the people about their religion, gods and history. The Father of English History and Doctor of the Church, Saint Bede who had lived during the 7th century and at the time of this transition from the Old Testament serpent on the cross to New Testament Jesus on the cross calls these images, “executed with wonderful art and wisdom.

Some bishops of the church had disagreed with this symbolic method of idolatry type education such as when the Bishop of Marseilles, Serenus had broken these idols. In the book, “An English-Saxon Homily on the Birth-day of St. Gregory,” By Aelfric (Abbot of Eynsham), he relates the story of Gregory the Great who had declared in his Epistle to Serenus, speaking of those Images which that Bishop had broken;

who know not Letters , may at least be able to read, by looking upon the Walls, what they are not capable of reading in Books. Wherefore, your Brotherhood you’d both preserve them, and hinder the People from adoring them. That sa f1 those who cannot read, may have, from whence to gather some Knowledge of History: And the people be, by no means, permitted to Sin, by the Adoration of a Picture.

Bede had further explained, “A Cross of Silver, and the Image of our Saviour in a Picture. ‘In this manner Augustine, and his Followers, are described, by Bede, to have come into the Presence of King Æthelbert. They bore a Cross for their Banner, Pro Vexillo: hon pro Adoratione, not for Adoration.” A Latin phrase meaning, “As standards: no honors for Adoration.” Hence, there was no homage or worship given to it, but only as St Augustine had said, “his Cross was the new ensign of Christian Warfare.”

But that you may under« sand the Use of the Images of Stints, and of our “Saviour, which our Saxon Ancestors, and who, writing of the Images of things in Solomon’s Temple, expressed himself thus, If it was lawful to lift up the brazen Serpent upon a Pole, which the Children of Israel beholding, were saved alive: why may we  net, by a picture, bring into the Memory of the A Faithfuls that sifting up of our Saviour upon the Cross, by which he overcame Death: or those “his other Miracles, and Cures, by which he wonderfully triumphed over the fame Author of Death Since the fight of these things make oftentimes a deep Impression on the Minds of the Beholders, and to those who are ignorant of Letters, open asit were a kind of lively reading, of the History of our Lord. For picture, in the Greek, is called “(secret for you to find out)”, that is, a writing that expresses the Life.

For thousands of years, the serpent or dragon was worshiped by many cultures all around the world. To these ancient people, the serpent had signified wisdom, intelligence, life and rebirth. In a sense, the symbol of the serpent represented Gnosis in the highest sense which would equate to human godlike status and the equivalent of a Christ or the messiah. However, to modern Christians, the serpent is the devil incarnate and the followers of this ancient wisdom are called Demons. Hence, the 2, 000 year old war between the new savior, Jesus who was the Roman-Jewish messiah of the New Testament (New Law) and the serpent savior who is the price of Demons of the Greek Old Testament (Old Law).

As Saint John had magically said, “The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.” – Revelation 12:9

In ancient Greece, the Greatest of all Serpents and the Prince of Good Demons (Angels) was Ophis (Οφιων, Ophiôn, Ophion who had reigned on Mount Olympus with his consort Eurynome. The name Ophis is Greek for serpent. Author and occultist, HP Blavatsky had written in Isis Unveiled that the Greeks called Apollo also by the name of Python, which is rendered the same as Ophis, Opis, Oupis, and Oub. Both Apollo and Ophis were the sons of Zeus who is father of the Gods, father of men, the god of light, truth and prophecy, healing, plague, music, poetry, and more. The followers of Ophis were called the Ophites. Ophis is the Greek equivalent to the ancient Egyptian Apap or Aph-ophis, the Great Serpent who later became Apis, or Epaphus, the Sacred Bull of Egypt. Blavatsky had written that Apollo and Python, Osiris and Typhon, Christos and the Serpent, are all convertible terms and the followers of this cult were called Masters of Wisdom, and all Initiates into the Sacred Mysteries, are called Nagas, or Serpents of Wisdom. However, I disagree that Typhon would be considered the same as the Apollo, Python, or Osiris.

From the Nile in Egypt, the African plains of Ethiopia, deserts of Arabia,  highlands of Persia, to the plains of Syria, and to the Phoenicians or Greeks of the Mediterranean Sea and their Holy Island of Crete, to the their biblical tribes of Canaan, the land of Scotia, Ireland, Brittain and to the island of the Culdee Druids in Iona, the ancient priesthoods of these people had always venerated the serpent. One of the symbols of both Hercules and the Celtic Druid Hu was a serpent.

It wasn’t the Jews who had actually had symbolically crucified Jesus to the cross at Golgatha (Place of the skull), but Roman soldiers. St. John tells us clearly that  it was the Jews who had cried out “Crucify Him,” and the soldiers who were Roman that executed the orders of the sentence of death. The Jews would be the instigators and the Romans the executors which makes them both accomplices.

What had occurred at this time was simple as I had written above. “With the form of a serpent He kills the serpent, for the serpent made out of the rod swallowed up the other serpents.”

Over time, the Romans who were often at war with these various serpent tribes had realized that in order to subjugate the world, they had to perform magic and rites that would counter attack the religious rites of the people they had wished to conquer. The main tactical magical method they would employ against these people of the serpent would be to replace or rename their Gods which they would take ownership of under new names and also reverse symbology, and iconography in which Rome’s chosen Caesar’s, martyred Saints and gods would usurp all other old serpent Gods and demons of the Old Testament.

St Bede2An example of these methods are related to us by the Father of English History and Doctor of the Church, Saint Bede who had lived during the 7th century in his book, “The Lives of the Abbots of Wearmouth.” Bede tells the story of how Saint Benedict in the same time period had made his ’6th’ and final trip to Rome in order to bring back relics and decorations to Northumbria in Monkwearmouth-Jarrow for the newly built monasteries of St. Peter and St. Paul which was the main center of Anglo-Saxon learning. The purpose of these relics and art was to show to people who had visited the monasteries concordance between the Old and New Testaments and how this change from the serpent of Moses to Jesus on the cross as a symbol of Christianity was passed down to us.

Soon after the appointment of Easterwine to the abbacy of St. Peter’s, and of Ceolfrid to the direction of St. Paul’s, Benedict had undertaken, and with his wonted prosperity accomplished his sixth and last journey to the city of Rome. Thence he now returned, laden as formerly with a store of ecclesiastical treasures. These, as usual, consisted of a bountiful provision of sacred writings, and an elegant collection of holy pictures. For he brought home on this occasion, the life of our Lord Jesus Christ, described in one series of paintings, with which he beautified the whole interior of the church annexed to the greater monastery, in honour of the virgin mother of God.

For the decoration also of St. Paul’s church and abbey he had procured another set, in which, upon an admirable system, was displayed the concordance between the Old and New Testaments. Of this, to give an instance: Isaac carrying the wood whereon he was ordered to be immolated, and Jesus bearing the cross, on which he died a sacrifice for our sins, are drawn in one piece, and exhibited as corresponding subjects; in a second are paired together, the Son of Man hanging on the cross, and the brazen serpent raised by Moses in the desert.

According to Greek Mythology, eventually the Good Serpent Ophis would be dethroned by his grandfather, the God of chaos Theta deathand darkness, Kronos (Saturn or Satan) and the goddess of fertility and war, Rhea (Saturn’s Moon). Hence, the true serpent and dragon of wisdom, Ophis was cast out and in his place, chaos and darkness would rule under Cronus (Saturn or Satan) and the goddess of fertility and war, Rhea (Saturn’s Moon). This is the reason why Jesus on the cross is considered by the Fathers of the church as the standard of Christian warfare and the lower case Greek t, the symbol of death.

Based on the testimony of Bede, we can safely date the change of the symbolism from the Old Testament serpent on the cross to the son of man, Jesus on the cross for the Anglo-Saxons had occurred around the time of Bede in the 7th century where it had first started in Rome and then later moved to the Anglo-Saxon territories such as Great Britain, England, France, Germany and Spain.

Neuroscientists at Stanford University have made a major breakthrough with regards to how the human brain engages in quantitative thought, and some say it’s opening the door for being able to someday eavesdrop on the mind’s inner-workings.

A team at Stanford’s School of Medicine had their findings published this week in the journal Nature Communications, and their eye-catching result is being considered a big step to understanding how the brain operates, specifically in terms of numbers.

After monitoring the brain waves of three seizure patients, the scientists determined that a particular part of the mind became active when the subjects were asked to solve mathematical equations, but also when quantitative terms — such as “more than” or “an extra little bit” — were spoken during routine discussions.

Bruce Goldman wrote about the study for the Stanford School of Medicine website and said the team of scientists “collected the first solid evidence that the pattern of brain activity seen in someone performing a mathematical exercise under experimentally controlled conditions is very similar to that observed when the person engages in quantitative thought in the course of daily life.”

According to the scientists who conducted the study, however, it could be the start of something much more.

We’re now able to eavesdrop on the brain in real life,” Dr. Josef Parvizi, the director of Stanford’s Human Intracranial Cognitive Electrophysiology Program and lead scientist behind the studio, said to Goldman.

To conduct the study, Parvizi and company monitored electrical activity in a region of the brain called the intraparietal sulcus which, according to earlier studies, has ties to numerosity, or the mathematical equivalent of literacy, as Goldman explained.

As expected, the Stanford scientists experienced a reaction occurring on that part of the brain when basic math was asked of the subjects. His team also compared those results with video recordings of the patients interacting with friends and family, and determined that just discussing quantitative concepts caused that part of the brain to become active.

You are able to see how neurons within the human brain are working in a real life setting,” Parvizi told Time Magazine.

The patient doesn’t need to talk to you. They can think about numbers and you can see that red mark (corresponding with activity in a particular brain region) go up,” he said to CNN.

As the team also learned, quantitative concepts cause similar reactions. When the subjects hear phrases such as “some more” and “many,” electrodes attached to the intraparietal sulcus alerted the doctors of activity. In one patient’s case, her intraparietal sulcus became active when she spoke over the phone about being given “some more Vicodin” and while discussing a “ten-to-fifteen minute seizure.”

Dr. Parvizi told Time that “[t]he only thing we can tell is that they were thinking about numbers,” and not specifics such as what integer in particular. As technology advances, though, new possibilities might someday emerge.

This is exciting, and a little scary,” Henry Greely, the chair of Stanford’s Center for Biomedical Ethics, said in a statement. “It demonstrates, first, that we can see when someone’s dealing with numbers and, second, that we may conceivably someday be able to manipulate the brain to affect how someone deals with numbers.”

As far as Dr. Parvizi is concerned, that’s still a long way coming.

We’re still in early days with this,” he told reporters. “If this is a baseball game, we’re not even in the first inning. We just got a ticket to enter the stadium.”

A Ukrainian white supremacist tried to start a one man race war in the UK by murdering a Muslim pensioner and exploding bombs near three mosques.

Pavlo Lapshyn, 25, a PHD technology student, was in Britain just five days before he stabbed defenceless 82-year-old Mohammed Saleem in Birmingham, launching a three month race-fuelled frenzy.

He told police he wanted to “increase racial conflict” and his bombs were detonated at a time of high community tension around the country in the wake of the alleged murder of soldier Lee Rigby in Woolwich, east London.

But the Home Office faced questions over why he was allowed in the UK in the first place after it emerged he had previously been questioned by police in his native Ukraine over a small explosion in his flat there.

The Lapshyn attacks also fuelled concerns of a new terror threat facing Britain from “lone wolf” far right, white supremacists, especially in the wake of the Norwegian mass killer Anders Breivik.

Police believe he was preparing to set off more homemade bombs when he was caught and his last, most powerful explosion could have killed or injured hundreds of people but for a blunder by Lapshyn.

The nail bomb, detonated next to a mosque in Tipton in July, sprayed shrapnel more than 200 feet and had been timed for 1pm, when worshippers would normally be arriving at the Mosque.

But that day’s prayers had been put back an hour due to Ramadan and no one was injured as a result.

He had previously detonated bombs near mosques in Walsall and Wolverhampton.

Lapshyn admitted murdering Mr Saleem, causing an explosion and engaging in terrorist acts when he appeared at the Old Bailey.

Mohammed Saleem, 82, who was murdered as he walked home from his local mosque (PA)

During a police interview, Lapshyn said: “I would like to increase racial conflict.

“I did it because they are not white and I am white.

Asked why he had attacked Mr Saleem, in April, he said: “I have a racial hatred, so I have a motivation, a racial motivation and a racial hatred.”

He was described by officers as “calm, calculated, committed” throughout the interview and remained emotionless as he admitted his crimes yesterday.

Lapshyn had arrived in the UK just five days before the murder to take up a work placement with a company called Delcam Plc in the Small Heath area of Birmingham.

Police later discovered he had extreme right wing literature such as the 1978 novel The Turner Diaries, in which a violent revolution evolves into a race war in the US and leads to the extermination of all non-white, gay and Jewish people.

He also researched information about Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.

Speaking outside the court, West Midlands Assistant Chief Constable Marcus Beale described Lapshyn as “dangerous and evil”.

“His motivation was very much that he thought the white man was better than everybody else and he was attacking for that reason.

””He was extremely dangerous. It is of great relief that he is not free to walk the streets any further.

“He’s a dangerous, evil and completely ill-informed man. There is no justification for the crimes he committed or the intent that he has.

“He was operating alone, he was a lone actor.”

Mr Saleem’s daughter Shazia Khan said of her father: “He did not do anything to deserve this horrific killing other than being a Muslim.”

On Lapshyn, she added: “It’s such a pity that he has lost his whole life for some personal hatred or opinion that he has of a particular faith. To kill someone because of what they look like and what they believe in is unforgivable.”

She said that when she saw Lapshyn in court, she pitied him.

“We just looked at him and we felt pity. He looked pathetic. He looked frightened and stressed.”

Her husband Hanif Khan said: “How can you get closure? I thought today we would get that, but you can’t. It opens up wounds. How can you weigh up a sentence to a life? What does it mean?”

He added: “I tried to weigh up what this individual has done, the most selfish act. It’s beyond comprehension.”

Theresa May, the Home Secretary, said: “This is a satisfying outcome to a highly distressing case where Pavlo Lapshyn’s hatred has robbed a family of a loved one and attempted to cause fear and division within our communities.”

Lapshyn, who had a Master’s degree in the technology of machine building, made the bombs from chemicals and equipment he had purchased from the internet, local shops and market stalls after arriving in the UK.

His first device exploded on June 21 next to a mosque in Walsall then a week later he set off a bomb near a Wolverhampton mosque.

On July 12 he detonated a nail bomb next to a mosque in Tipton which blasted shrapnel and debris over a 230-foot area.

Lapshyn set off the Tipton device, which contained 600g of nails, at 1pm to coincide with daily prayers when hundreds of people would usually congregate at the mosque.

Fortunately, due to Ramadan, the mosque’s prayer time had been put back an hour to 2pm meaning the building and car park were empty when the device exploded.

“Luckily the bomb went off at 1pm.

“An hour later the building and car park outside would have been filled with people and cars,” said Dept Supt Edwards.

“At least 200 people attend prayers at the mosque and during Ramadan this could go up into thousands.”

He added: “He increased the amount of explosive that he put in each bomb. He openly admitted he wanted the Tipton bomb to hurt people.”

Police initially linked Lapshyn to the Walsall bombing using CCTV which showed a man arriving at the scene with a children’s “Shark” lunch box containing the bomb and leaving empty-handed a few minutes later.

They trawled through thousands of hours of footage from all over the area to trace the unknown man back to the Small Heath area of Birmingham, where Lapshyn was living in accommodation provided by his employers.

Community policing teams finally uncovered Lapshyn’s identity when they presented CCTV images of him at Delcam’s offices on July 18.

Lapshyn was arrested the same day in connection with the Walsall bomb and immediately admitted to the attack.

During his questioning he also informed police that he had been behind the Tipton bombing and the mystery explosion in Wolverhampton.

Subsequent searches of his room and computer revealed material linking him to the murder of Mr Saleem.

When confronted with this evidence on July 20, Lapshyn admitted killing the grandfather and was charged with his murder.

He first appeared at the Old Bailey on July 25 and was remanded in custody

Lapshyn came to the UK after winning third place in a competition for a work placement at Delcam, where colleagues described him as a “loner”.

He had been awarded a Master’s degree with honours from Ukraine’s Natural Metallurgical Academy in 2010 before starting his PhD.

He then won the scholarship to come to the UK in 2011 but it is not known if he started planning his attacks before arriving.

West Midland Police are working closely with their Ukrainian counterparts to build up a picture of Lapshyn’s life before he came to Britain.

Lapshyn will be sentenced on Friday and can expect a life sentence.
